Why Locals Love Dim Sum Sam
Dim Sum Sam offers a delightful journey into authentic Hong Kong-style fast food and Cantonese cuisine right in the heart of New York City’s Upper West Side. Specializing in dim sum and classic Chinese takeaway, this stylish yet casual spot at 2485 Broadway is perfect for anyone craving bold, comforting flavors without sacrificing convenience.
The menu boasts a wide variety of dim sum staples, each crafted to satisfy traditional palates while offering a fresh take on classic recipes. Favorites like the Bbq Pork Buns boast a perfectly fluffy exterior and rich, savory pork filling, while the Shu Mai dumplings present an ideal balance of shrimp and pork, bursting with umami in every bite. The Pork & Shrimp Bean Curd Skin Rolls have quickly earned a reputation as a must-try item — their delicate texture combined with fragrant seasoning delivers an exquisitely satisfying mouthfeel. For vegetarian diners, the scallion pancake and taro buns stand out as both flavorful and comforting choices.
The rice and noodle trays cater exceptionally well to larger groups or takeout orders. Dishes like the Yang Chow Fried Rice and the Singapore Mei Fun highlight fresh ingredients and well-seasoned textures, making each spoonful a savory delight. Meanwhile, meat selections such as Sweet & Sour Chicken and Beef with Broccoli showcase tender cuts enveloped in perfectly balanced sauces that hit all the right notes — tangy, savory, and deeply satisfying.
Dim Sum Sam's ambience is warmly inviting, blending the efficiency of a fast-food setup with the authenticity of a traditional Cantonese eatery. The emphasis on cleanliness and friendly service, as noted by many patrons, makes it an easy choice for both a quick bite or a casual meal on the go. Customers like Yohji Cantar Daquio praise the streamlined ordering via kiosk and the approachable, courteous staff, which enhances the overall dining experience.
What truly stands out at Dim Sum Sam is how it marries convenience with quality. Unlike some dim sum restaurants that cater primarily to a sit-down crowd, this location excels as a takeout destination without compromising on flavor. Leo Zou’s observations about the congee being especially comforting on chilly days resonate well, capturing that genuine warmth you want from classic Cantonese comfort food.
Moreover, innovative offerings like the green sichuan pepper beef tripe with vermicelli add an exciting twist to the menu that adventurous eaters will appreciate. And for families, crowd-pleasers such as the black truffle dumplings and Shanghai rice cater to both kids and picky eaters alike, balancing subtle luxuries with familiar dishes.
In essence, Dim Sum Sam feels like a thoughtfully curated gem — delivering authentic Cantonese fast food that is approachable, affordable, and bursting with flavor. Whether you’re dropping by after a brisk walk on Broadway or ordering in for a cozy dinner at home, the culinary craftsmanship and genuine warmth of this spot make it a standout choice for lovers of Chinese cuisine in New York.

Relatively new store, everything taste good but I feel like something’s lacking, not enough impact like ones you get in China town. The congees were really good for a cold day. The bean curd skin rolls were definitely the best one and is a must get. Shumai were about average. Chicken feet very flavorful.

After a snowstorm in NYC, all I wanted was something warm and comforting—and Dim Sum Palace near Columbia University really delivered. Everything we ordered was solid. The Hong Kong–style milk tea had a strong tea flavor and wasn’t overly sweet. The Fuzhou dumplings had a nice chewy wrapper with a generous filling. The Shanghai soup dumplings had thin skin and plenty of soup—great with a bit of vinegar. I was pleasantly surprised by the taro buns: smooth, not too sweet, and very well made. The rice noodle rolls (cheung fun) were silky with a light sauce, and the stir-fried beef ho fun had good wok hei—no broken noodles, beef was tender. We also tried the maoxuewang, which came with lots of ingredients and a rich, numbing-spicy flavor without being overwhelming. Perfect with rice. The space is a big plus. It’s very close to Columbia, spacious, not too noisy, and not crowded. There are plenty of outlets, so it’s easy to relax for a bit after eating without feeling rushed. A great spot for students or anyone looking for comforting dim sum and Chinese dishes—especially on a cold day.

This was my first time here and I’m so amazed with how good the food is and its affordability! Also, I want to add that the employees were so friendly and the place is so clean. I love that I can also order from a Kiosk so it was no hassle.

The food is spectacular, black truffle dumplings were a hit with my kids, and the Shanghai rice is a good option for picky vegetarian. The HK milk tea is great, not too sweet. The tables for four are awkward to sit at, because of large oddly shaped metal support. But the food is great, place is clean, and staff nice.

I was so excited when I heard that there’s a new location opening up for dim sum palace and it’s more of a takeout than dine in which i think is great since many people are on time crunches. Service is great and the food i’ve had many times even in their LIC location! I really like their green sichuan pepper beef tripe because there’s vermicelli as well.

So excited that Dim Sum Sam finally opened on the UWS! I used to go to the 23rd St one all the timeobsessed with their egg tarts and salted egg yolk taro buns (sadly no bakery section here). This spot feels more like a takeout place than a dine-in restaurant, but everything I tried was great — chicken wings, Shanghai fried rice, and turnip cake. The fried rice portion is huge! Also tried their chef’s picks, the Fragrant Spicy Pot and Tender Diced Chicken with Chili Pepper, both super flavorful and loaded with ingredients. Staff were super friendly and patient, even helped me double check the ingredients since I don’t eat certain things. Been ordering from here a lot after work lately. Totally recommend!

This is the new Dim Sum restaurant on the UWS, Broadway between West 92nd and 93rd Streets. Excellent menu, wide variety, in the traditional Hong Kong style. Food is very fresh and well prepared. Staff is very friendly, helpful in describing the different dishes and quick service. Great addition to the Upper West Side. A+
